Aton is the disc of the sun in ancient Egyptian mythology, and originally an aspect of the god Ra. The deified Aten is the focus of the monotheistic religion of Atonism established by Pharaoh Amenhotep IV., who later took the name Akhenaten.
He was referred to as a heretic, because of his actions against priests of the god Amun. He and his wife also established new capital city of ancient Egypt Achetaton (Amarna).
